Supervisory Motivation - currently an oxymoron!
Why not treat them as performers and offer them performance-focused feedback that enables performance improvement? Why not ask them for ideas and show them respect, since those things would be sincere and personal?
Gallup research found only one in four employees "strongly agree" that their manager provides meaningful feedback to them, that the feedback they receive helps them do better work.
Only 21% of employees strongly agree that their performance is managed in a way that motivates them to do outstanding work.
Why not focus on improving the supervisory leadership and involvement skills of the supervisors, of which only 1 in 10 report that they receive any real training in managing and leading people and who are predominantly selected because they are good technicians.
The best appreciation messages will be in how they are treated and actually appreciated by the leadership in the organization for what they actually do. We have these “Employees of the Month” kinds of programs that celebrate one winner and brand everyone else as a loser.
Why not simply listen to their ideas for what can be improved and then ENABLE them to make those improvements? THAT would be your best message of appreciation, in my opinion and experience. Show them some respect, involve and engage them in making things better, and dis-un-empower them to make changes.
