Ringing in the ears, also known as tinnitus, can be a sign of many things. I’m not sure if it is indicative of brain damage, but it is something that shouldn’t be ignored. The best type of doctor to see would be a Neurotologist. They are ear-nose-throat doctors with additional training/certification in regards to neurological conditions.
Tinnitus can be extremely difficult to live with, even if there is no other health condition underlying. There is as of now, no medical or surgical treatment for it, other than benzodiazepines. Drugs like Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, and Ativan do not actually decrease the tinnitus, but they do make it less bothersome, as it can be almost unbearable to deal with.
You were wise to ask this question, because it could be indicative of an underlying neurological condition. Also, it can contribute to loss of balance, which can lead to falls that can cause brain damage. People have actually committed suicide due to the severity of tinnitus. Things like water running, fans blowing, and music playing through small speakers can be as painful as somebody stabbing me in the head with a knife repeatedly.
